Sasha Grey’s Melbourne! Exploring Australia’s Exotic Southern City With Sasha Grey!!

Welcome to Melbourne, Australia!

I love this shot of what quickly became one of my favorite places to visit – Melbourne, Australia! What a gorgeous city, sitting on the southern edge of the world! The picture below is a view from the world’s tallest building – southern hemisphere edition – more on that later…

In the picture above, you can see the Tasman Sea on the left, Tasmania is straight ahead, and the Indian Ocean is to the right…keep going south and you will soon find Antarctica. Melbourne IS at the bottom of the world!

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in Australia. As of June 2011, the greater geographical area had a population of 4.1 million. Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians or Melbournians.

This is the downtown area as seen from above – at the very bottom you can see the classic train station – and here is a view of the rest of the city and the environs beyond:

I had the chance to go to Melbourne, and I fell in love with it. It is a very sophisticated European-style city, which is different than most parts of Australia. Here’s an idea of what the street vibe is:

Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land. It was named by Governor of New South Wales Sir Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847.

Melbourne was ranked as the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Group’s Intelligence Unit in August 2011 and again in 2012. Look at this serene river scene and you can see why:

Flinders Street Train Station!

I woke up early one morning and walked past the Flinders Street Station, a gorgeous building that houses Melbourne’s active train system:

This is a classic and active train station, with a vibrant yellow exterior:

After a short walk, I was in the park by the river, where I was greeted by dozens of rowers hitting the river…

It’s a gorgeous walk, and if you turn to your right, you gaze upon this:

Eureka!

The Eureka tower is a modern masterpiece looking out over all of Southern Australia. It is a beautiful building rising 88 floors above Melbourne.

Filming 88 Stories Up With Sasha Grey!

The observation deck (Eureka Skydeck 88) occupies the entire 88th floor of the Eureka Tower and is the highest public vantage point in a building in the Southern Hemisphere at 285 m (935 ft). It opened to the public on 15 May 2007…we filmed up in the tower…here is a shot of the crew and our Host Sasha Grey…

Skydeck 88 features ‘The Edge’ – a glass cube which projects out from the building with visitors inside, suspended almost 984 ft above the ground. When you enter, the glass is opaque as the cube moves out over the edge of the building. Once fully extended over the edge, the glass becomes clear. Here is Sasha inside before the glass clears…

When the glass clears you can look straight down, or out at the view of the world…

I love views from this height, especially when you can get a 360 degree feel for the city and its surroundings….

Birrarung Marr!

Back on the ground, you walk over to Birrarung Marr, which is an inner-city park between the central business district in Melbourne and the Yarra River. It was opened in 2002.

The name means ‘river of mists’ and ‘river bank’ in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, the original Indigenous inhabitants of the Melbourne area.

Melbourne’s Talking Bridge!

One of the unique aspects to the park is a “talking” bridge…as you walk across, you get a unique montage of audio, including aborigine sounds, chats and music…it gets louder as you walk across, as the sound scape is activated by your movement…it is beautiful and hypnotic…

Looking to your right, you see the soccer stadium and the railroad tracks that lead out of town…

To the right of the stadium is the Rod Laver Arena – a tennis stadium that is part of the Melbourne Park complex, the main venue for the Australian Open in tennis since 1988. The arena’s name officially changed in 2000 to honor Rod Laver, a three-time winner of the Australian Open and one of world’s greatest tennis players. YOu can get a better look at the complex from, where else, Eureka:

The train tracks go right into downtown Melbourne, and on this quiet Saturday morning it makes the town feel deserted…

I felt like I had the town to myself, and after walking across the “talking bridge”, I felt like I had entered a town that hadn’t opened yet…

Sasha Signing

We filmed in Melbourne for two days – and while we were there, my Host Sasha Grey appeared for a signing at a local store, where hundreds of fans lined up to meet her…

Sasha was great to work with, and it was fun to see her interact with her fans, who got autographs and posed for pictures…she was great with all of them…I am always impressed with talent who can exude a positive, friendly attitude with fans, talking to each one just enough to make them feel special, especially when there are hundreds waiting…

Sasha was a total professional, terrific to work with, and it made the entire shooting experience in Melbourne relaxed and fun…we only had two days in Melbourne but we got to see a lot of it in that time…and the Melbournians were gracious and friendly.

After the signing, we posed together – I take a lot of pictures, but it is always the best way to remember our team’s fun Melbourne adventure!

Crown Casino Finale!

Melbourne Australia

After filming all day, we went to the Crown casino for dinner, and then walked through the casino, which was packed with people…and all we wanted was to find the exit.

Melbourne Australia

So we traipsed through the casino, went past the same restaurant we had just exited, and finally found ourselves outside on the terrace overlooking the taxi stand…on the other side of huge cement “planters” – which we all, including Sasha, climbed over and dropped down to the ground – dropping down about ten feet below…and we all just laughed and laughed – then we walked over to the taxi stand, where a huge mass of people waited…and taxis stood idle.

Melbourne Australia

Not knowing the procedure, I just walked up to one and we all got in, and we all left a huge group of people standing by the taxi stand…not quite sure what just happened, we all just laughed and called it a night, and the next morning we were off to Sydney…after two days of adventures in one of the most beautiful cities in the world…Melbourne!

Sasha Grey Shark Diving! Sydney’s Bugs! Opera House Beauty – Australia Rules!

Hello, Sydney!

Welcome to one of the most beautiful sights in the world! It’s Sydney, Australia of course, and the gorgeous Opera House – one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, along with Sydney’s iconic Harbor Bridge…a million different ways to film it and I tried them all….

The city offered a million gorgeous views, and thanks to an opportunity I had to film in Australia, I managed to capture some of Sydney’s iconic images!

Sasha Grey Explores Australia!

Like I said, I took a lot of pictures, and usually force my co-workers to take them as well…Sasha Grey hosted a show that we filmed in Australia, so we got the chance to check out many of Sydney’s most beautiful locations like the Opera house…

You can walk along the water in Sydney – a huge park that leads right to the Opera house – and you find numerous opportunities to film these two iconic images – the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge – in what is a beautiful, and very relaxed city…

One regret is that we didn’t get the chance to tackle one of Sydney’s most exciting tourist attractions: what you see below are people on Harbor bridge – you can actually climb the outside of the bridge to the top, which would certainly offer a unique view…

Aboriginal Music!

We passed a native Aborginal, playing a didgeridoo, a beautiful, haunting sound that is impossible to replicate, although I did buy one and have it shipped home…it showed up safe and sound…and still unplayed…

Sasha Swims With Sharks!

The purpose of our time in Sydney was to showcase some of the more exciting things you can do in the city, and so Sasha agreed to film a sequence that involved her learning to scuba…

We filmed the hour of instruction she got, getting familiar with the equipment before shooting one of the coolest things I’d ever filmed…and in the picture above you can check out that underwater camera that goes into the tank with them!

Manta Ray!

After being prepped, Sasha went into the huge tank, along with one cameraman and instructor, and the rest of us made our way into the underwater viewing area, shadowed by a very big manta ray above us!

Here is where it gets really cool: Sasha and her Instructor WALK through the underwater coral reef…while we can watch them through the glass, they slowly make their way through the water, but they are not alone…

Shark Alert!

That’s right, they are in the water with sharks! And these aren’t little baby sharks, either: Sasha was in the water with real live, full grown sharks, with nothing separating her from them, no protection other than a very calm and experienced Instructor leading the way…

Sharks Everywhere!

You might think this is behind glass, but it wasn’t, and at one point Sasha actually had a shark flip his tail at her head…but she remained calm and didn’t react at all, which is what she had been trained to do, and very bravely filmed a terrific sequence!

Great job as always by Sasha, willing to take on any challenge – and we had a great shooting experience in Sydney while we were there…

Sydney’s Bugs! – Welcome To Sydney’s Fish Market

Back on dry land, I headed to Sydney’s fish market to see what type of unique fish they had for sale…and I wasn’t disappointed!

Sydney’s fish market is one of the largest in the world, with a nice commercial area to eat and shop, and to explore some of Australia’s most unique species…

Moreton Bay Bugs!

Have a bug! That’s right, this is a unique species to Australia – a “bug”, kind of a shrimp’s body stuck on a smashed Lobster’s head…and it takes like it! Delicious!

As you can see by the sign, they aren’t cheap… although since these prices are in Australian dollars it actually might not be that much…can’t remember the exchange rate…

Beautiful Sydney!

The entire team had a great trip to Australia – the weather was gorgeous, the people were amazingly friendly, and the food was great! Thanks to everyone in Sydney who helped us have such a great time and get such great stories…more to come!

July 4th Fireworks

One year ago today I started this blog – my wife Alex recommended it as a fun creative outlet – and for me it has been just that…allowing me to share a number of different stories, such as when Alex and I went to Provence, and the beautiful village of Gigondas:

Gigondas france

You can read the whole story by searching “Provence” – and see how we cooked on Julia Childs’ stove with Patricia Wells:

Julia Childs and Patrica Wells

Thank You!

I want thank EVERYONE who has stopped by to read a post – I sincerely appreciate the interest. I realize that I cover a LOT of ground on the blog – everything from food to travel as I’ve noted above, along with classic movies and crazy exploitation, and of course – BACON.

Bacon!

supersized bacon-burger

I admit that I have posted A LOT about bacon, in all of its crazy shapes and forms…like this:

bacon hat

And of course, bacon isn’t always friendly, as evidenced by this picture of bacon getting ready for battle:

baon helmet

I have also shared many crazy bacon recipes, and I have tried to cover that world by showcasing such culinary delights as the double bacon melt!

double bacon melt

Bacon! Burgers!

The world is full of great food, but everyone seems to really spark to the pictures I post of some of the world’s best burgers, like this masterpiece from Taylor’s Refresher in Napa Valley…

Taylors Refresher cheeseburger

It has, of course, been a year of super-sized food, especially in the world of burgers and bacon! Everything from this: the world’s largest bacon cheeseburger…

world's largest bacon cheeseburger

to THIS…The Bacon Demon!

bacon-demon

I LOVE my bacon demon…and if you enter “bacon” or “cheeseburger” into the search area, you will see dozens of posts regarding these two “most important” food groups…and thanks to all of you who have read the posts from this past year and celebrated all that bacon has to offer….

Great Movies! Classic Exploitation! Asian Extreme!

I love great movies, and have posted stories about some of the 70′s most overlooked gems, like this one:

the last of sheila

I also love classic action movies like “The Seven Ups” and more recently, “The Raid: Redemption”…and of course I LOVE classic exploitation like this:

Mantis In Lace

Mantis In Lace!

I mean, how can you NOT love this? 70′s exploitation revolving around a woman who drugs men with a psychodelic BANANA and kills them? Look, if it’s good enough for The President AND Vice President:

President Obama

I LOVE that they were photographed in the shadow of “Mantis In Lace!” I know that I test the patience of food and travel lovers when I go off on a movie rant, but I’m like everyone else – I enjoy the best of the WORST – like my very popular post about the “Ten MOST Misguide Movies Of All Time”…including this gem:

cant-stop-the-music-poster

Yep, a disco musical starring Bruce Jenner and The Village People, released just moments after disco died…and one of the most misguided films of all time!

Never Cut Funny!

So clearly, I love a lot of different things….and that is what I post, a lot of different things – yes, including stuff like this:

exploding balloon head

With that said, here are some interesting facts about my first year blogging:

The Most Viewed Posts:

I have posted 283 stories this past year. Here are a couple of the most widely read – everything from exploitation films to food, travel and swimming with sharks:

Christina Lindberg – The Queen Of “Artsploitation!”

christina lindberg ad

Swedish born Christina Marinette Lindberg was internationally known for her work as an actress and glamour model in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her rough grindhouse movie “Thriller” aka “They Call Her One Eye” inspired Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill”.

They call her one-eye-poster

She is a fascinating woman – an exploitation icon as evidenced by the number of hits I get daily – check out her story by searching “Christina Lindberg”…a fascinating Actress who bared all for her art, and these WERE european art films – as you will see when you watch one…

Sasha Grey!

Sasha Grey Australia

I had the good fortune to work with Sasha Grey in Australia, and my story about that trip – when she swam in a tank full of sharks – got more views than any other post in its first month online…thanks to all of the Sasha fans for checking it out – Sasha tweeted me as well about how much she loved this shoot…

sasha grey-in-tower

Another very popular post was all about my wife’s smash hit show:

Jerseylicious!

jerseylicious-cast-appearance

First, here is the official style network page for the show, with tons of pics and videos…http://www.mystyle.com/mystyle/shows/jerseylicious/index.jsp

“Jerseylicious” premiered on the Style network in March of 2010. Season 5 premieres next month – what a ride it has been!

If you watch, you know how great Olivia and Tracy are – oh, and you also know they don’t get along!

I also posted a bunch of “Jerseylicious” fun facts, like the fact that – if you want to go left – you have to take a right!

jersey-left-goes-right-signs

Tokyo!

I have posted a number of stories about my various trips to Japan – all have been well received, so thank you for that! The single most popular post involved the Tokyo adventures of my Host Alex Sim-Wise!

Alex Sim-Wise!

I shared my adventures in Tokyo filming with London Correspondent Alex Sim-Wise, who isn’t shy about dressing up for a shoot:

alex sim-wise-in-her-blue-wig-outfit

She explored everything that makes Tokyo the most exciting city in the world, including jumping behind the counter at one of Tokyo’s tiny bars in the Golden Gai district:

alex sim-wise laugh-golden-gui-bar

She capped off a perfect night of filming by leaving her self-portrait in the bar on the wall…check it out when you go there!

alex sim-wise self-portrait-line-drawing

Harems, Killer Badgers, Oh No!

So, it’s not all good news…there have been a few posts that just, for whatever reason, failed to garner much interest at all. Here is an example: I thought you would all be interested in a look at some of the classic “men’s mags” from the 50′s…boy, WAS I WRONG!

nature_in_revolt_01

NOBODY was interested in this…more than two months after I posted this story, there has been very little interest in reading it….OK, I thought it was a fascinating time in publishing – before my time, but to me it evoked a “Mad Men” vibe and highlighted a time when magazines were discreet, and these offered young boys a more adult “Indiana Jones” sense of adventure…

Daring Dolls Magazine

And The MOST Popular Post EVER Is…

Again, thanks to everyone who has stopped by and read a post. I will continue to try and post stuff that interests and entertains you, like this one, which is the most popular one I have ever posted!

And A Baba Yaga To You All!

Yep, “Baba Yaga” tops the list of the most widely read post ever! So, for those of you who may not have read it and want to know, WHAT IS BABA YAGA!?

First, “Giallo” is an Italian genre of literature and film, which indicates crime fiction and mystery, and includes elements of horror fiction and eroticism.

giallo-book

The word giallo is Italian for “yellow” and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback mystery novels with trademark yellow covers, and they became movies with provocative titles like this:

strip-nude for your killer

And I wrote about one in particular, a strange little giallo called “Baba Yaga”…and every single day dozens of people read the post…it has MORE THAN 5,000 views to date – the most of any single post, so congrats to the “Baba Yaga” in you all!

Baba Yaga

The Next Year…

Thanks again for reading my posts this first year, and next year I plan to post more of the same, such as this story coming soon about Alex Sim-Wise and her journey into Tokyo’s dark recesses…

alex sim wise-on-floor-by-dolls

Also, more to come with Sasha Grey, travels to Copenhagen and Bangkok – plus a lot of burgers and bacon as well!

Let Me Know What You Think!

And now a request: please, please, please – send me notes! Let me know what you think! Tell me what you like, and what you hate!

Sasha Grey Surfs! Sasha Steps In Gum! Surf’s Up At Bondi Beach Australia!

Sasha Grey John Rieber

Time to head back to Australia with Sasha Grey for more travel adventures, this time at the most beautiful beach in the world!

Welcome To Paradise – Courtesy Of Bondi Beach!

Without a doubt, this is one of the most spectacular views in the world – this is Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia…which I was fortunate enough to visit while filming in Australia with our Host Sasha Grey…and of course, I took a lot of pictures to share with you!

Heading To Bondi Beach!

“Bondi” is an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks. I like the way that sounds, but the way Bondi looks is suspiciously like Manhattan Beach in Southern California…

Bondi is a popular beach and the name of the surrounding suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Bondi Beach is located 4 miles east of the Sydney central business district, and it’s a bit of a crowded drive, as Bondi beach is VERY popular…

Welcome To Bondi – Room For Everyone!

When you get there, however, you quickly realize that the beach is huge, with plenty of room for everyone…
so the first thing we all did was get pictures of ourselves with this gorgeous beach behind us…

Well, I got pictures…Sasha needed some caffeine…

Sasha Grey Coffee

And, while discussing some behind-the-scenes footage that Sasha shot herself the day before, she got a bit of a “gummy” reception…

Sasha Grey Surfboard

Lose The Gum, Battle The Surf!

After our gum adventure, we headed down the beach to film Sasha getting surfing lessons…while there are better places to surf in Sydney, NONE had this look…

The beach is crescent shaped, surrounded by small cliffs with hiking trails, and of course, lots of apartments with perfect views of the ocean…

Sasha’s Surf Lessons!

Sasha was eager to take her first ever surfing lesson…and if you go to Bondi, know there are many surf shops lining the beach that offer instruction as well…so you can show up to Bondi in the morning and be surfing within hours…

Sasha Grey the Surfer

We had limited days in Sydney to film, so our goal was to film Sasha training for a half hour, then get her out on the water for some surfing shots…we all agreed that thirty minutes of training wasn’t fair, but Sasha as always was a real trooper…because we were filming the entire thing as well…

Sasha Grey Surfing

Sasha took to it immediately, getting comfortable with the board, the way you ride out on the water and set yourself up for the wave…it all went very smoothly…and of course we shot the instruction from every conceivable angle as well…

Sasha Grey Surf Lesson

I give Sasha a lot of credit for learning so quickly, as she also had to “host” the segment and pay attention to the Instructor and the Producers simultaneously…After her instruction, Sasha grabbed her board and headed out into the water…and once again, she was quite the trooper, since she got her first taste of the water just a moment after I shot this…and it is COLD!

Sasha paddled out to find waves over and over so we could film her…and most times she spent a few moments upright before kneeling down on the board and cruising into shore…

Great Job Sasha!

I will say, Sasha did a great job after only a half hour…I captured this shot of Sasha “yelping” after she fell into the cold water…

It WAS cold, but she never complained, and paddled out over and over again so we could get the shot we needed…then, while Sasha was changing, I headed out to get a few more pictures of this gorgeous locaiton…

The Beauty Of Bondi!

As you can see, it’s a gorgeous beach with plenty of room to stretch out…and there is plenty of beach to explore as well. If you walk the length of beach, you find yourself on rocks that jut out into the ocean, and if you follow them around, you get some amazing shots looking back at Bondi as well…

Dozens of people were scattered along this side of the beach, taking in the view and relaxing…that is one thing I noticed about Sydney: the people are relaxed, casual…very “beach community” in their vibe…there’s no rush because the view is too beautiful to hurry away from…

Introducing Todd Miller!

Of course, my brilliant Production Manager Todd Miller arranged everything flawlessly as always, and asked me to get this shot of him – an inside joke for a friend of his. I was happy to do so, but now I share with all of you as well…you’ll have to ask him what it means…

It was a great afternoon of filming – and Sasha did a terrific job as always. I have posted some additional stories of our Australia filming, so search “Sasha Grey” and see more of our adventures down under!

Welcome To Melbourne, Sasha!

I traveled to Australia with Sasha Grey to film some lifestyle segments, and our first stop was the gorgeous city of Melbourne!

melbourne australia

Melbourne is a beautiful city, located on the southern coast of Australia, very far south – in fact, if you look on an atlas, you will see that Melbourne is very close to the South Pole.

Eureka!

More than just being a gorgeous city, Melbourne also has the tallest building in the southern hemisphere – the Eureka Tower!

eureka tower melbourne

Of course, we HAD to go up to the top – and we found ourselves on the 88th floor…and we were filming the entire thing, of course…

sasha grey australia

Once we were on the 88th floor, we walked around the entire perimeter in order to see all of Melbourne stretched out below…

melbourne eureka tower

Sasha Enters “The Cube!”

After absorbing the view, we were given the opportunity to take Sasha into “the Cube”, a small compartment on the 88th floor – with frosted glass so you couldn’t see out at all…naturally, Sasha rushed in!

Sasha Grey in Eureka Tower

We all had to put hospital-style slippers over our shoes so we wouldn’t scrape the floor…and we got a short introduction for what was to happen next…Sasha was excited to see what that would be, and moments later, we found out!

sasha grey-in-tower

88 Stories High! The Real Tower Of Terror!

As I said, Melbourne’s Eureka Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere….after going up to the 88th floor, we all got into a cube – and this happened:

melbourne australia

So as you saw, the cube extends away from the building and then the frosted glass goes completely clear – and you are suspended over air – with great views everywhere including straight down!

Sasha Signing

We filmed in Melbourne for two days – and while we were there, Sasha appeared for a signing at a local store, where hundreds of fans lined up to meet her…

I was very impressed with Sasha – how terrific she was with all of her fans – signing pictures and posing for pictures with each one of them…and talking to them in a casual, fun way…it was a great event…

sasha grey

I am always impressed with talent who can exude a positive, friendly attitude with fans, talking to each one just enough to make them feel special, especially when there are hundreds waiting…

Sasha was a total professional, terrific to work with, and it made the entire shooting experience in Melbourne relaxed and fun…we only had two days in Melbourne but we got to see a lot of it in that time…and the Melbournians were gracious and friendly as well.

After the signing, we posed together – I take a lot of pictures, but it is always the best way to remember our team’s fun Melbourne adventure! And speaking of adventure…

Melbourne’s Crown Casino Finale!

Melbourne Australia

After the signing event, we went to Melbourne’s famous Crown Casino for dinner, and then it was time to head back to our Hotel…

Melbourne Australia

So we traipsed through the casino, took a few turns and went past the same restaurant we had just exited…

melbourne casino

So it was back through the casino again – all we wanted to do was find the exit – and we finally found ourselves outside on a terrace overlooking the taxi stand…

Unfortunately, the taxi stand was on the other side of a set of huge cement “planters” – ten feet high and blocking our way. So all of us, including Sasha, climbed over the planters and dropped down to the ground – about ten feet below…and we all just laughed and laughed – then we headed over to the taxi stand, where a huge mass of people waited…and taxis stood idle.

Melbourne Australia

Not knowing the procedure, I just walked up to an empty taxi and we all got in, and we all left a huge group of people standing by the taxi stand…not quite sure what just happened, we all just laughed and called it a night, and the next morning we were off to Sydney…after two days of adventures in one of the most beautiful cities in the world…Melbourne!

Time to head back to Australia with the terrific Sasha Grey – for an underwater adventure like no other!

Sasha Grey Underwater

Let’s Swim With The Sharks!

Yes, this is Sasha Grey inside a shark tank. No partitions, nothing between her and the sharks. Here is how she got there: as you may have read on this blog before, I had the chance to film some stories in Australia with Sasha Grey. Here we are at Bondi Beach:

sasha grey john rieber

This was the day that Sasha agreed to surf for the first time – always up for a challenge:

And Now, Time For Sharks!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Along with learning to surf, Sasha agreed to go with us to the Manly Beach Aquarium – where they have a huge tank full of sharks and stingrays – and you are allowed to climb in there with them!

Swimming With Sharks!

I also posted about Sasha’s adventures inside a shark tank, and I got a ton of feedback from her fans – everyone wanted to see more pictures of Sasha among the sharks…so here goes – and this time with video!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha Gets Instructed!

The first thing that happened was Sasha’s dive prep – she had to learn how to breathe underwater – this was her first time with scuba gear…but even though she had never done it before, she was a real trooper…doing a “speed” version of training in a side pool so we could film the segment with the sharks, who were hovering nearby…

Sasha Grey shark diving

And Here’s Some Video!

I filmed some of the instructions as well…here you go:

Sasha soaked up the instruction, knowing we had a limited amount of time to film at the Aquarium before it opened to the public. So, even though she had NEVER been scuba diving before, she focused on what needed to be done and did it. Then, it was time to go meet some sharks! First, the trainer and Sasha walked very slowly into the large part of the tank…

Sasha Grey Shark Tank

Talk About Your Super-Sized Stingray!

Here is what it looked like for us – we were all safely protected in a tunnel with the tank all around us – with the glass protection it didn’t seem like that big a deal…until we saw the size of the stingrays and sharks that were inside with Sasha….and yes, that is one BIG Stingray…

stingray sasha grey

Sasha’s Tanked!

While we were in the shadow of the stingray, Sasha was INSIDE the tank with them…focused on moving slowly and always walking, never swimming in the water – as that would attract the wrong type of attention….I mean, look at how close they were to her!

Sasha Grey Stingray

As it turns out, the Stingray was a bit of a ham…showing up in shot after shot with Sasha, like this photo bomb:

Sasha Grey and Stingray

Sasha’s Shark Encounter!

Once Sasha acclimated herself to the water, adjusted to wearing the scuba gear AND getting used to the curious Stingray, she began to walk around. Note: as I said before, they WALKED through the tank – Sasha was told that any other type of movement could make the Sharks see her as FOOD…

Sasha Grey sharks

It only took a moment for the sharks to see her – check out these pictures as the sharks become more and more curious:

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha Grey Swims With Shark

LOOK HOW CLOSE THEY ARE!

Sasha never flinched – even though the sharks swirled around her and, at one point, a very feisty shark flicked his tail at her head – but she remained cool, calm and amazingly collected considering that!

Sharks Sasha Grey

Sasha’s CLOSE ENCOUNTER!

Remember, there are no partitions or screens in the water – look at how close Sasha is to these sharks! This is no joke – there is NOTHING between her and the sharks…and while the Instructor was nearby, and there was a camera man inside the tank as well, this is a VERY BRAVE Sasha Grey in this tank…remember, she had NEVER been scuba diving before this moment…and here she was standing alone among Sharks!

Sasha Grey Shark

A Shark Photo Bomb!

This next picture is really amazing: as Sasha is posing for me through the glass, TWO Sharks line up for a hilarious photo bomb! Or, as Sasha said later, “they were deciding which one was going to eat me first!”

Sasha Grey Sharks Photo bomb

I LOVE how well-behaved these two Sharks are: mugging it up for the camera…I also got a shot of one of them giving me the evil eye…

Sasha Grey Swims With Shark

Sasha stayed in the water for almost a half hour, and after awhile the sharks lost interest – they got used to her and she got used to them – and so the smaller fish stopped by for a look at her as well:

The Juliette Society

Congrats to friend Sasha Grey, who has a novel coming out this summer! Here is the cover of the book, and a great pic of her promoting the book in Europe, where it was just released:

Sasha Grey The Juliette Society

Here’s the plot of “The Juliette Society”:

Catherine, a blossoming film student whose sexuality has been recently stirred, finds herself drawn into a secret club where the world’s most powerful people meet to explore their deepest, often darkest sexual fantasies. But even as these new experiences open intense new pleasures for Catherine, they also threaten to destroy everything she holds dear. In her debut novel, Sasha Grey takes us inside a private, high-profile, sex society where anything and everything can happen.

Sasha-Grey

The novel is released here in the U.S in August!

Sasha Goes Batty For Sydney!

Sasha Grey in Australia

As I have posted before, I got to film a series of stories with Sasha, like this one where she surfs Bondi Beach:

And I got to tour some of Sydney’s most iconic location with Sasha, like the Sydney Opera House:

sasha grey and john rieber australia

And we also explored one of the coolest cities in the world!

Downtown Sydney

Sydney is a gorgeous city, and we shot in many interesting location, which leads us to Sasha’s “Bat” encounter:

Check Out These Park Trees

The city’s parks are full of beautiful trees, and one day, we decided to walk through the park – and I noticed something unusual:

Bats! Bats! Bats!

Yes, at one point in the park you see nothing but bats, bats, bats in the branches above you! Here’s a short clip of Sasha in the park as a tour group is going by…

Sasha Grey bats in Australia

Then of course she makes her way over to the trees where she can see the bats hanging down and staring at her…

Sasha Grey Sydney Bats

Then of course we decided to shoot a bit of on-camera commentary about the

Eureka!

Our Australia trip also took us to Melbourne for a fan sighting – and we had to go to the top of the Eureka Tower, which is 88 stories high!

And here is one more behind-the-scenes video of Sasha as she was gazing out of Eureka Tower, Melbourne Australia’s 88-story tower…

If you want to see the entire Eureka video, just look below and click!

Well, perhaps not, but I do appreciate the interest in the stories: whether they are about food, travel, movies, music, or even stuff like THIS:

Burger King Chinese salad towers

Yes, if you saw my story, you know that Chinese Burger King customers have started to “super size” their meals at the salad bar…and if you’ve ever read a blog post of mine, then I can guarantee you’ve seen one of these:

hamburger recipes

Of course I LOVE burgers – and bacon too! I especially love bacon when someone has done something REALLY WRONG to it – like creating a bacon sandwich with ten pounds of bacon – like this one!

A Bacon Mona Lisa!

And I love when people use bacon for “non-food” things like making a portrait of the Mona Lisa – all out of bacon!

All The Stories Will STILL Be On Johnrieber.com FIRST!

As always, EVERY story is posted on this site first and foremost…but I wanted to also offer a place to go for a “best of” look at some of the topics I’ve posted about A LOT…like the wackiest place in the world: TOKYO!

alex sim wise tokyo cosplay

Because I’ve posted so many food stories, I’ve set up a website that will showcase all of my food posts, like the one that focused on the “bread-cheese-bacon-bread-cheese-bacon-bread” cheeseburger!

dudefoods-bread-cheese-bacon-double-cheeseburger

If you want to see ALL of my food posts in one place, please check out my new site!

http://biteeatswallow.com/

But, to reiterate, all of these stories will be posted primarily here, on my main site…that goes for all of the following “best of” sites….like the collection of travel stories I’ve done….because sometimes I just want to get away, like here to Cannes…

Cannes Old Town

So, if you like to travel as much as I do, then maybe you want to catch up on some of the older travel stories!

tokyo-nights

I have also put my favorite travel stories on one site as well…along with this main site, all of my stories about Japan, Seoul, Australia etc will live on a travel site as well – and of course Cannes, where I love to go to relax:

Check all of those stories HERE!

And finally, there is a special place in my heart for a certain type of movie:

fascination

That’s right – classic exploitation is a lost art form that needs to be embraced and celebrated – and it’s not all old stuff, either – let’s not forget “J-sploitation!”

You will still find ALL of these stories posted here first, but if you need some ideas for weekend viewing – yes, it’s the crazy world of exploitation HERE!

Of course, if you are reading this, you’ve come across my main site, and to reiterate, ALL stories are posted here. This is where I cover such breaking news as these “sushi poppers!”

Two. Leave your inhibitions at the door.

Three, and most important. Everything you see and hear from now on must remain between us…”

Sasha Down Under!

I am a big supporter of Sasha’s work, because I admire how focused and driven she is. As many of you know, I had the chance to film lifestyle segments in Australia with Sasha…and she was terrific to work with…

sasha grey and john rieber australia

Here is a look back at some of those adventures – first, Sasha scaled the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, The Eureka Tower in Melbourne Australia…

eureka tower melbourne

After going up 88 stories, Sasha went into a small room and – well, you can watch for yourself:

Sasha Grey in Eureka Tower

Shark Photo Bomb!

And of course, Sasha went underwater to walk among sharks in Sydney…and two of the more playful sharks decided to photo bomb her!

sasha-with-two-overhead-sharks

Here’s a short video of her adventure, including her describing how one of the sharks took a swing at her!

First, here is her instruction before entering the tank:

Sasha Grey Sharks

Once inside, Sasha was literally among the sharks, with NO barrier between her and them…and she describes what happened next:

And of course, our Australia adventure was just beginning…

Surf’s Up With Sasha!

Even though she had never done it before, Sasha willingly donned a wetsuit and learned to surf at Australia’s legendary Bondi Beach:

Sasha Grey Surfing lessions BTS

That led to my favorite video with her EVER – when she discovered – quite unexpectedly – just how cold the water was at Bondi!

sasha grey surfing

Sasha was an amazingly fast learner: within a half hour she was surfing! I also love this video, which captures the moment Sasha discovers that they spit their gum out on the ground in Australia just like the rest of us:

sasha grey john rieber

It was a great trip down under, capturing the lifestyle of the Aussies, and even cooking bugs! Yes, that is what they are called, although they are really just “giant-shrimp-with-squashed-lobster-heads” things:

Sasha Grey Australia Adventure

Still, she cooked them, along with a kangaroo steak – they are raised commercially just for that purpose – and we had a nice taste of Australia:

Sasha Grey John Rieber cooking

I posted a number of short videos that captured some of the “behind-the-scenes” moments from the trip – you can find them here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Johnrieber/videos

I have thought about these fun shoots as I read all about Sasha’s success with “The Juliette Society” – so if you haven’t purchased the book yet, take care of that now, and buy a few for holiday gifts!

Sasha Grey in Melbourne

And, if you are a Sasah Grey completist, here are ALL of the stories I have posted of our Australian adventure…beginning with Sasha’ 88-story Melbourne adventure:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/01/11/sasha-grey-goes-88-stories-high-in-australias-eureka-tower/

Then, it was off to Sydney:

Sasha Grey Stingray

That’s where Sasha donned a wetsuit and went for a walk among sharks – here is the complete shark dive adventure:

http://johnrieber.com/2012/11/21/sasha-grey-shark-diving-sydneys-bugs-opera-house-beauty-australia-rules/

I have to reiterate that there was nothing between Sasha and the sharks and stingray except her instructor:

Sasha Grey sharks

And of course, I was given more pictures by someone on the crew, so I did a shark followup here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/02/26/sasha-greys-shark-dive-sashas-shark-photo-bomb-sashas-extreme-shark-diving-adventure/

Then it was time to head to Australia’s famed Bondi Beach:

Sasha Grey Surf

Here is the entire surfing adventure, with a number of fun videos of Sasha on a surfboard:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/01/03/sasha-grey-surfs-sasha-steps-in-gum-surfs-up-at-bondi-beach-australia/

Then, when I previewed the book, I also shared some video of Sasha discovering bats in Sydney:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/05/18/sasha-greys-juliette-society-sasha-goes-bats-for-australia/

Luckily, we shots lots of behind-the-scenes pics and video, which is why I am able to share them with fans:

And my most recent story focused on the release of the novel, plus some additional outtakes I found!

http://johnrieber.com/2013/08/11/sasha-greys-new-novel-sasha-grey-shark-dive-outtakes/

OK, so that’s it – your entire library of Sasha Grey’s Australia adventures! If you made it this far, I remind you to make sure and purchase “The Juliette Society” for yourself and friends this holiday season!

Thanks for allowing me to share all of this material with your fans, Sasha – and congratulations on the success of your novel!

Wait until you hear the story behind this picture!

OK, this was designed to be, as it is known in TV, as a “deep tease.” You will have to keep reading to find out how I ended up taking this picture of Jenna Jameson and Sylvester Stallone – it’s all part of a birthday celebration of sorts…

Two Years Of Posting!

John Rieber blog

Yes, it’s the two year anniversary of this blog! When my wife Alex suggested I start this blog two years ago today, she thought it would be a fun creative outlet. She had NO idea it could lead to THIS:

bacon cube burger japan

Yes, I used that trust Alex placed in me to share things like this “bacon cube burger”, and some of you have thanked me for it. I have also shared things like THIS:

sgt-peppers-bee gees

If you don’t recognize this image, consider yourself lucky. (Yes, it’s The Bee Gees as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band!) While this blog has been a fun project for me, it has also turned into much more: it’s been a way to share a wide variety of stories of interest to me, and more importantly, it has been a great way to meet a lot of new people with similar passions…like all of the Todd Rundgren fans I’ve met…

Todd Rundgren greatest hits

521,270 Strong!

I wanted to update everyone on the blog, and of course to thank all of you who take the time to read it. Last year at this time, I had just cracked 104,000 views.

Eagles on stage with eagles logo

In the last year, I saw a huge increase in the average daily traffic to the site – thanks in part to the huge amount of interest in things like the Eagles reunion tour, which you can see above – as well as the large number of people who have been interested in seeing just HOW Marlon Brando remembered his lines on the set of “The Godfather”:

The Godfather exclusive

As you can see, he DIDN’T! Yes, that is Robert Duvall holding cue cards for Brando! That story has been very popular, and if you missed it, here it is:

I also shared Clemenza’s recipe for meatballs – you know, when you need to feed a dozen guys after you “go to the mattresses”:

So, thanks to all of you, I smashed through a half a million views for the blog! I wanted to not only thank everyone for their support, but to share some of the most popular stories – and preview what is still to come!

Cool It, Ringo!

So, what have people responded to most? Well, it’s been everything from crazy stuff like this picture of Ringo and Raquel Welch clowning around on the set of the cult classic “The Magic Christian”…in fact, these guys always do great:

The Beatles Rooftop Performance

The Beatles never cease to interest people, and rightly so – my single most viewed story of last year was this one – looking at the “lost” Beatles documentary, “Let It Be”:

“Jerseylicious” Forever!

Thanks as well to the terrific cast of “Jerseylicious”, and to the fans who love them…my wife Alex Duda created this show in 2009, and in the five seasons so far I’ve been lucky enough to befriend many of the incredibly talent people followed on the show…

Olivia Blois Sharpe Jerseylicious

Oliva is not only “America’s Sweetheart”, she’ a terrific makeup artist – and a wonderful person as well…Tracy is also great, and yes, she got married in the “still to be seen” season six of the series…

Jerseylcious Tracy DiMarco And Cory Wedding

I’ve had an amazing amount of interest in my behind-the-scenes looks at the show…like when Gigi, Tracy and Olivia visited Steve Harvey:

It was a great year for the team – I had more than 11,000 views of the story about the “Jerseylicious” book by Anthony and Olivia – with amazing cast pictures by Karl Giant!

So many fun posts so far, and more “Jerseylicious” to come….you know, THE WEDDING…

In addition to stories about TV and movies, I also love posting stories about music…including stories about the eagles, Paul McCartney, great new female singer/songwriters like Grace Potter, the best and worst Jame Bond themes, and of course:

“Todd Is God!”

Todd fans know what that means, and they showed it in a big way this year…I want to thank the Todd Rundgren fans who have really shown support for this blog, including a retweet from Todd himself! Here is that story:

The original story was about Todd’s friendship with Laura Nyro, an amazing singer/songwriter…and apparently Todd approved!

Laura+Nyro

I posted this story and got a retweet from Todd’s twitter account – which was really cool – I’ve also been lucky enough to have been acknowledged by Director William Friedkin, Actress Rebel Wilson and the legendary singer/songwriter Paul Williams….among many others who have RT’d my stories and shared them with friends…

What’s With All The Sites?

I’m sorry if I confused some of you with the “topic-specific” sub-sites, but here’s an explanation: When I started blogging, Alex suggested a title that would capture what the site was all about – but as you see, it’s about a lot of different stuff! So I used my name as an easy entry point…

confused-face

Well, maybe not so easy, since my entire life has seen RIEBER spelled “REIBER”…So, to resolve the confusion, here’s how it works…I post virtually every single day on Johnrieber.com. I hope you all sign up to get notifications – so you won’t miss anything like THIS:

Leonard Maltin’s LAST EVER Movie Guide! The End Of A Pithy Era!

Leonard Maltin last movie review guide

It’s the most widely read movie guide of all time!

It weighs two pounds, it has 1,612 pages – and it’s the end of an era!

best movie reviews

Here’s what CNN is reporting: “Leonard Maltin was 18 when the first edition of his “Movie Guide” came out in 1969. Forty-five years later, the book — a well-thumbed totem as familiar on film fans’ coffee tables as a bowl of popcorn or a stained drink coaster — will soon be no more. The 2015 edition, just released, will be the last.

leonard_maltin

Maltin wishes he didn’t have to end its run, he said in a phone interview. But the writing is on the wall.

“I saw it coming a couple years ago,” said Maltin, 63. “There were pretty consistent strong sales for many, many years, and that started to change. It came as kind of a jolt.”

best movie guides

The internet has made the book obsolete. Which is really a shame, as it is a joy to read and have at the ready when channel surfing for something to watch.

channel surfing

Year after year, you could depend on another edition of Maltin’s guide, and it just keeps getting better. Some highlights from the latest edition:

aaron-loves-airena cara ngela-movie-poster

The first review is for “Aaron Loves Angela”, a three-star effort starring Irene Cara that is, to quote the guide, an “OK combination of comedy, drama, violence and Jose Feliciano’s music!”

Zu Warriors movie

On page 1,611 sits the last review, for “Zu Warriors”, the 2001 Hong Kong/Chinese kung fu epic, which Maltin calls “visually sumptuous but dramatically muddled” and gives two stars.

In between are almost 16,000 movie reviews – movies you love, movies you hate, and a LOT of movies you’ve never heard of – like this one!

Ps_your_cat_is_dead

“P.S. Your Cat Is Dead!” With Steve Guttenberg!

Well, you don’t EVER have to watch this one-and-a-half star effort…just read Maltin’s quick review:

“Claustrophobic, one-set film features stereotypes that seem badly dated. The only character we can work up any sympathy for is the cat, which is never seen!”

best movie review guide

Here are another gem starring legendary Actors Richard Burton and Lee Marvin:

klansman

It’s “The Klansman” – one of those few classics reviewed in the book that actually is listed as “BOMB”. Here is why: Maltin says it’s a “thoroughly trashy racial melodrama”, and boy is it ever!

worst films the klansman

If you want to read more about one of the most misguided race movies ever made, click on my story here to read about this classic piece of 70’s trash:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/04/14/django-please-mandingo-klansmen-ojs-movie-debut-most-offensive-70s-movies-ever/

As much fun as these reviews are to read, even Maltin makes classic mistakes: listen to how much he hates a film that he gives a two-star review:

“To us, this gory, cold-blooded story of sick man’s lurid descent into violence is ugly and unredeeming.”

And he’s referring to the brilliant “Taxi Driver!”

taxi-driver

Now that is a BIG mistake! Usually he is much more accurate, like this 4-star review of my second favorite film of all time:

O Lucky Man! review

“Mammoth allegory with surrealistic flavor about young coffee salesman who pushes his way to the top only to fall and rise again.”

That is for “O Lucky Man!”

o-lucky-man!-poster

Read all about this incredible movie, and find out about the “Seinfeld” connection, by clicking here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/03/22/o-lucky-man-malcolm-mcdowells-seinfeld-connection/

So thanks Leonard Maltin for all of your years of passion for movies…I will wear this book out reading all of your 16,000 reviews!

More To Come From “The Juliette Society”!

Congratulations to Sasha Grey on the best-selling status of her debut novel, “The Juliette Society”! And just announced: a sequel is on the way!

sasha_grey_juliette_society

Sasha Grey’s novel, “The Juliette Society” is a worldwide sensation – the book is a bestseller in a number of countries around the world – and the excitement continues as Sasha is writing a sequel!

Sasha Grey The Juliette Society

Sasha has been promoting the book around the world, including personal appearances and book signings – when I traveled to Australia with her, she had tons of fans meet her at a personal appearance in Melbourne:

Melbourne Australia is a gorgeous city, and it is also home to the tallest building in the southern hemisphere:

After going up 88 stories in Eureka Tower, Sasha went into a small room and – well, you can watch what happened for yourself:

Sasha Grey in Eureka Tower

The people in Melbourne were terrific, and a huge number of fans came out to meet Sasha when she made a public appearance:

After Melbourne, we headed to Sydney, a much more raucous city, where Sasha let us put her to the test with a variety of extreme sports – and she did them all, including swimming with sharks…

Shark Photo Bomb!

Sasha donned scuba gear for the first time ever and went underwater to walk among sharks in Sydney…absolutely NOTHING between her and the sharks…and two of the more playful sharks decided to photo bomb her!

Here’s a short video of her adventure, including her describing how one of the sharks took a swing at her!

Surf’s Up With Sasha!

Even though she had never done it before, Sasha willingly donned a wetsuit and learned to surf at Australia’s legendary Bondi Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world:

I posted a number of short videos that captured some of the “behind-the-scenes” moments from the trip – you can find them here:

I have thought about these fun shoots as I read all about Sasha’s success with “The Juliette Society” – so if you haven’t purchased the book yet, now is the time!

Audacious, Mind-Blowing Cinema! “Enter The Void”, “Vanishing Waves” And “Holy Motors”!

$

Tokyo Enter The Void

Whenever awards season is underway, it always reminds me of some of the most audacious – and neglected – films ever released…

worlds-wildest-cinema

These are movies that are hard to describe in a one sentence, challenge the viewer in ways you don’t expect movies to do, and reward you with a mind-blowing cinematic experience, thanks to the Director’s singular vision…

Sam Peckinpah directing

“Action!”

There is nothing more exciting than watching a Director’s passion for a project unveil itself onscreen…whether it’s Sam Peckinpah directing James Coburn in the brilliant and under-rated “Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid”, or Francis Ford Coppola on the set of the greatest film ever made, “The Godfather”…

The Godfather behind-the-scenes

There are amazing films released every year – some are big hits, but many don’t get the exposure they deserve…well, it’s time to blow your cinematic mind just a bit:

vanishing-waves

Because here are three of the most audacious, innovative and mind-blowing films of the past few years!

Here Are Three Visionary Films To Share With You!

Enter The Void

Holy Motors

Vanishing Waves

“Audacious” doesn’t begin to describe these three brilliant works of art! Let’s get started with the latest film from one of the most controversial Directors in the world!

Enter The Void

Enter The Void!

Argentinian Director Gasper Noe makes tough, provocative films….that just happen to be brilliant. Here is his masterpiece from 2009:

world's wildest cinema

A U.S. drug dealer living in Tokyo is betrayed by his best friend and killed in a drug deal. His soul, observing the repercussions of his death, seeks resurrection. Check out the trailer:

enterthevoid

My friend Sasha Grey got to watch this with Director Gasper Noe in his Paris screening room, and she told me to seek it out immediately – and boy was she right! This film is electrifying – shot from the main character’s point of view…

provocative films

Gaspar Noé describes his movie as a “Psychedelic Melodrama”. As the lead character says:

“Basically, when you die your spirit leaves your body, actually at first you can see all your life, like reflected in a magic mirror. Then you start floating like a ghost, you can see anything happening around you, you can hear everything but you can’t communicate. Then you see lights, lights of all different colours, these lights are the doors that pull you into other planes of existence, but most people actually like this world so much, that they don’t want to be taken away, so the whole thing turns into a bad trip, and the only way out is to get reincarnated.”

audacious films

According to the website IMDB, Gaspar Noé was inspired by the famous “star gate” sequence in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The camera never stops moving, gliding over a neon Tokyo at night….

Tokyo Enter The Void

The screen is drenched with color, as you can see from these screen shots from the film…

neglected films

This is challenging filmmaking for sure, but worth the time and effort. And if you REALLY want to be challenged, remember that Noe is the Director of the ultra-violent and controversial “Irreversible”…

Irreversible

As challenging as his movies are, they are also brilliant films that explore dark territories of the mind…and speaking of singular visions, wait until you see this:

Holy Motors

L’Homme à la tache de vin: What makes you carry on, Oscar?
Mr. Oscar: What made me start, the beauty of the act.
L’Homme à la tache de vin: Beauty? They say it’s in the eye, the eye of the beholder.
Mr. Oscar: And if there’s no more beholder?

Holy Motors!

That dialogue says it all. This film is almost impossible to describe, so check out the trailer first:

holy_motors_film

Here is all you need to know about the plot: from dawn to dusk, you travel in a limousine alongside a mystic man named Monsieur Oscar.

classic movies

Director Leos Carax’s professional name is an anagram of his real name, ‘Alex’, and ‘Oscar’. And interestingly, his regular collaborator Denis Lavant stars as Monsieur ‘Oscar’…

HolyMotors

Leos Carax wrote the part of the supermodel with Kate Moss in mind, but by the time of filming, Moss was about to get married so the role went to Eva Mendes.

Eva Green movie

Singer Kylie Minogue also stars in the film – in a part that the Director turned into a musical role when she agreed to be in the movie.

Holy-motors-Kylie-Minogue

According to IMDB, the film’s initial concept started with a trend Leos Carax had observed where stretch limousines were being increasingly used for weddings. The director was interested in the cars’ bulkiness!

holy-motors

From there, the characters and situations become more and more ethereal and hallucinatory – with haunting imagery throughout…

world's wildest cinema

Leos Carax’s most well known work in the US is the great – and provocative – 1999 film, “Pola X”.

Pola.X

And if those two films are not mind-blowing enough, well then it’s time to go “inside the mind” once again!

controversial science fiction VanishingWavesHome

Vanishing Waves!

Yes, another mind bender, literally…In “Vanishing Waves”, a neuron-transfer scientist experiments with the thoughts of a comatose young woman. Check out the trailer…

classic science fiction

The experiment takes an unexpected twist when the two meet in their mutually altered forms of consciousness. Soon, their psychic meetings turn into a romantic, sexually charged relationship set against the backdrop of surreal dreamscapes created by their collective minds.

vanishing-waves

“Vanishing Waves” was directed by Kristina Buožytė and Bruno Samper, and was a co-production between three countries: Lithuania, France and Belgium…

world's most provocative cinema

Once again, this is a movie that delves into the mind: how thoughts can be controlled, how thoughts can merge, and of course, the erotic nature of the mind as well…this is a great science-fiction film – full of big ideas and startling imagery…

great science fiction films

Kudos to “Artsploitation Films”, a cutting edge home video company releasing challenging films from around the world….like this one released with Elijah Wood:

Toad Road movie

And speaking of Elijah Wood, here is his new thriller with Sasha Grey:

In the three years I have been posting, these stories have collectively generated almost one million views – it is exciting to see the response to new stories as well as stories posted a year ago or longer – and from the comments I have gotten, it’s nice that a wide range of topics are of interest…from amazing travel memoirs like this:

faraway

Read about this incredible Author and her year on a south pacific island by clicking here:

And of course, I have posted many times about my favorite musical group of all time!

Beatles Abbey Road pictures

The Beatles Are #1!

The greatest musical group in history is also making history for me! Here is the single most viewed post I have ever published:

The Beatles Lost Rooftop Concert Film!

beatles lost music

Yes, you can never go wrong when you’ve got The Beatles helping you out! My “Let It Be” post continues to be the most viewed story of all time on my blog, which I love because this Beatles documentary is probably the greatest “lost” film of all time, and you can read my entire post about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/04/06/let-it-be-the-beatles-lost-documentary-londons-live-beatles-rooftop-concert/

And yes, I own a VHS copy of the movie, which is one reason I love The Beatles so much!

Now, onto a “different” kind of movie…

42nd street

Three years ago, I discovered that certain stories got a lot of interest, like films from the “grindhouse” era of New York’s 42nd street: it was almost three years ago when I actually warned people which movies NOT to show at a family holiday gathering!

the sinful dwarf

Which, I will reiterate, is NOT a film to be shared with relatives…although “The Sinful Dwarf” is a classic example of “euro-sleaze”, a rough type of 70’s film…classic cult cinema that lives on thanks to DVD and on demand services – and I do have a fondness for wacky exploitation movies, like this:

mantis-in-lace

Grindhouse Cinema Lives!

Yes, it’s an acquired taste, but I have met a ton of passionate exploitation fans who enjoy stories about his unique time in movie history…and look, not only did I share the plot of “Mantis In Lace”, but I found this picture as well!

rays-hell-kitchen-biden-obama-mantis-and-lace-poster-2009

The fact that the President and Vice-President would be eating in front of a “Mantis” poster…I love the internet! Ii you want to more, just click on my “grind house gift guide” here:

But I also love to travel, and Alex and I have been lucky enough to have some great adventures, which I have shared throughout the years:

eggplant recipes

Here is Alex harvesting a fresh eggplant from the Patricia Wells garden in Provence, where we cooked with this legendary cookbook Author:

Julia Childs and Patrica Wells

We got to cook on Julia Childs’ original provincial stove, and you can read all about it here:

No matter how great cooking with Patricia and her husband was, it pales in comparison to the fun I’ve had with my kids as well…

JAPANESE BURGER

This is my daughter Jessica, who came along on a work trip to Tokyo and got to see some crazy japanese food…

http://johnrieber.com/2014/05/06/tokyos-build-a-burger-wacky-japanese-burger-ads-wildest-food-for-sale/

We had a great time eating our way through some of Tokyo’s great food…but it paled in comparison to this hilarious trip, which I call:

The “London Grind!”

Jeff Rieber London

My son Jeff went with me on a work trip to London, and got to work with the crew for a few days as well…which led to what we call his “London grind” adventure – a hilarious night out with some very drunken British business people, highlighted here:

And Let’s Never Forget The Bacon!

Yes, I have posted about ALL kinds of bacon as well…that’s because bacon is funny, and you “never cut funny”…so whether it’s a bacon wedding cake…

Or perhaps it is bacon that is utilized in a more “fashionable” manner…yes, bacon has proven to be very very popular, and the stranger the better!

I have also shared my love of music – and of course my admiration for the music and career of Todd Rundgren!

Todd Rundgren wacky outfit

I have been a lifelong fan of this musical Artist, and have posted many stories about his unique career. For example, did you know that he created MTV? Read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/08/02/todd-rundgren-inventor-of-mtv-a-hollywood-square/

And one of my favorite stories about Todd Rundgren was his special musical friendship with the late Singer/Songwriter Laura Nyro…

Congrats to Billy Childs for the success of this project, which highlights great Laura Nyro music!

Reimagining Laura Nyro

Todd Rundgren AND Laura Nyro fans have been hugely supportive of the site, and I truly appreciate it. I’ve also met a lot of great people who have great blogs as well, and I appreciate everyone’s support and interest…

Stevie Wonder Live!

I also shared my review of Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life” concert in Chicago, including this live performance of “Saturn” with India Arie:

And there is so much more to share!

Year Four Sneak Peek!

With more than 700 posts, I just keep finding more stuff of interest to me. So what else can you expect going into 2015? Here are some clues:

Rio movie posters - Zolton Hound Of Dracula

Behold “Zolton”!

Yes, I’ve got some classic movie posters to share, thanks to an incredible website that helps to keep these alive…that will be posting soon, and I also have some great stories about classic Hollywood, such as the legendary sex kitten Jayne Mansfield:

Australia Rules! Sydney Vs. Melbourne! A Beautiful “Down Under” Battle!

Melbourne – Australia’s Most Beautiful City!

melbourne australia

That’s right, one of the largest cities in the southern hemisphere is also the most beautiful city in Australia!

Oh wait, did I mean to say:

Sydney – Australia’s Most Beautiful City!

Sydney Opera House

That’s right, it’s actually Sydney, with the incredible Opera House and Harbor bridge that is Australia’s most beautiful…well, as you can see, both cities offer an amazing view…

Sasha Grey Sydney Australia

What a dilemma! Is Sydney, with a beautiful skyline and incredible scenery, Australia’s most beautiful city? Or is is the classic, european vibe of Melbourne, with an iconic train station:

Melbourne Australia

I was lucky enough to travel to both great Australian cities, which leads me to ask this question:

What Is Australia’s Most Beautiful City? Melbourne or Sydney?

Trust me when I tell you that Australians have a very strong point of view on the matter! For the entire time I was there, I was told by people from Sydney that Melbourne was dull and lifeless, even with this incredible beauty:

Melbourne Australia

Down Under Pride!

Yes, residents of Sydney proudly extolled their virtues. And the folks in Melbourne told me that Sydney residents were crass and unsophisticated:

sydney australia

Well, let me say that it was mostly good-natured, and certainly based on pride for their environment – so I decided to show you what made BOTH cities so special…beginning with Melbourne’s Eureka Tower:

Melbourne Eureka Tower

The Eureka Tower!

The Eureka Tower is the largest skyscraper in southern hemisphere – 88 stories, and the views of Melbourne and the surrounding area was beautiful from he top:

Melbourne Australia

Melbourne Australia

The Secret Of The Tower!

I was lucky enough to shoot a sequence at the top of the tower with my Host Sasha Grey. I filmed this sequence as Sasha discovered the secret of the tower:

I love that video – you can look straight down 88 stories and see people like ants below….and as I showed you, the views of the area are beautiful..and I also love this short snippet I filmed from the 88th floor just moments before, when I caught Sasha in a “candid” moment:

Sasha was such a great talent to work with, and you can see more of Sasha’s adventures in Melbourne by clicking on my story here!

http://johnrieber.com/2013/01/11/sasha-grey-goes-88-stories-high-in-australias-eureka-tower/

So Melbourne made a great case for itself: European style and class with a “down under” sense of adventure…and if you look on a map, Melbourne is one of the world’s southernmost cities!

antarctic map

I’d love to go back and be able to explore more of the surrounding areas, but on this trip was was just two days of fun and then off to Sydney!

Sasha Grey Australia Adventure

Welcome To Sydney!

As much as I loved Melbourne, Sydney had plenty to offer as well. First of all, you are amazed by the beauty of the Opera House and the Harbor bridge, which you can actually climb up with a group if you want!

Sasha Grey Australia Adventure

Sasha Grey Australia Adventure

You can see those intrepid climbers on the upper right…offering an incredibly unique vantage point of Sydney –

sydney harbor bridge

It is a city that celebrates its beauty – with so much water everywhere you look – and what’s in water? That’s right – seafood! If you go down to Sydney’s acclaimed fish market, you can see one of their unique food items – “bugs”!

Sasha Grey Australia Adventure

“Bugs!”

These “bugs” are a strange combination of shrimp-like creature with a “flattened” lobster head…but they are delicious! My Host Alison Haislip had no problem digging into them!

Alison Haislip Sydney Australia

And Sydney is also home to one of the world’s most famous beaches as well…

Bondi Beach Australia

Welcome to Bondi Beach!

It’s simply gorgeous – pristine sand and waves that curve around a gorgeous slice of Sydney…

Australia Bondi Beach Sasha Grey

Sasha was up for anything in Sydney, including surfing for the first time ever! But that wasn’t her only “first!”

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha jumped at the chance to step into a tank filled with sharks – her first time using scuba gear! And after a thirty minute instruction, she entered the pool – filled with sharks and stingrays – with NOTHING between them! Here is a short snippet of her “walk among sharks”:

Sasha Grey Stingray

Shark Tank Sasha Grey sharks

And of course, one shark flipped his fin at her, but she didn’t panic! She also kept her cool when two sharks decided to “photobomb” her!

sasha-grey with two sharks

Surfing Bondi!

As I showed you, Bondi beach is absolutely beautiful, and Sasha agreed to learn to surf for the first time! This led to my favorite “candid” moment of all – when I captured Sasha telling me about surfing Bondi Beach – and then she discovered something about Australia’s water!

I appreciate that Sasha was a good sport – she still laughs about these videos – like this one that I love: I happened to be filming her as she was telling me how she did a special “circular” shot for me, then realizes she stepped in gum!

Sasha Grey John Rieber

Here is a look at the entire Sydney adventure:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/01/03/sasha-grey-surfs-sasha-steps-in-gum-surfs-up-at-bondi-beach-australia/

Sasha wasn’t the only great G4 talent that I traveled to Australia with: I also got to hang out with the incredible Alison Haislip!

sydney bondi beach tourst

She got the chance to dig into a big meal in Sydney, which you can read all about here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/03/08/alison-haislips-mega-surf-n-turf-aussie-alison-digs-into-sydneys-bugs/

Alison was also great to travel with, and she made Sydney a fun culinary adventure…

So, the question was: which city is more beautiful – Sydney or Melbourne?

Sydney Harbor

Melbourne Australia

As you can see, they are both beautiful, so I will give style points to Melbourne but energy credits to Sydney – if you’ve been to either, let me know what you think!

The Sinful Dwarf

Say Hello To The Face Of Exploitation Cinema!

Someone asked me to explain the phenomenon of exploitation cinema – an era from the late 60’s to the mid-80’s when movies pushed boundaries and broke taboos…and resulted in some of the most deranged and entertaining films of all time!

42nd street

Welcome To Times Square!

It all began in New York’s Times Square, at a time when it was more dangerous to be IN THE THEATER than it was to be on the streets!

42nd_St,_NYC,_Lyric_Theatre,_1985

Time To Talk About All Forms Of Movie ‘Sploitation!

These movie theaters in Times Square were open 24 hours a day, showing some of the weirdest films ever made!

“Exploitation” films were also known as “Grindhouse” films, because they played New York’s 42nd street theaters all day and night…look at what a seedy scene it was at the time:

new york grindhouse

You can take a trip down memory lane with a story I posted about this unique time in cinema…just click here:

https://johnrieber.com/2012/11/23/sex-violence-grindhouse-have-a-purient-holiday-an-exploitation-gift-guide/

Hard to imagine that this is what Times Square used to look like – but it’s a part of movie history that has disappeared…except on home video and on demand, where these films are having a re-birth!

Sugar Cookies grindhouse

A “David Hasselhoff” Moment!

Here’s a look at the kind of films that were shown in Times Square in the 70’s and early 80’s…from the subtle to the ridiculous – and with David Hasselhoff too!

DAvid Hasselhoff Boner

“Hello, Boner”! Time For Classic “Exploitation”!

Yes, there were recognizable stars in some of the more “mainstream” exploitation films of the era, including David Hasselhoff who starred as “Boner” is one of the more hilarious examples – movies with lots of topless girls, subtle sexual situations, mostly “R”-rated, or soft “X” – nothing too controversial, just good clean naughty fun like this:

x-rated cheerleaders

The “Cheerleader” genre was silly, good-natured fun, with just enough skin shown to keep teenage boys flocking to the movies…here’s a good primer of the genre:

https://johnrieber.com/2015/02/19/cheerleaders-pom-pom-girls-david-hasselhoff-as-boner-cult-classics-rah-rah-rah/

These films could play drive-in theaters all around the country…not too extreme for rural audiences…

Lorna+The+Exorcist

In the 70’s, it was up to the Europeans to give us a “harder” look at the genre, “art” films that featured lots of sex and violence – films that proudly celebrated being called:

the hot nights of Linda

HOT HOT HOT “SEX-Sploitation!”

Grindhouse theaters were inundated in the early 70’s with films from Europe that blew the doors off the buildings they were shown in: sex kittens like Lina Romay showed off EVERYTHING in every movie!

Lina Romay naked

Romay made a series of films with her husband, Director Jess Franco, that were provocative, explicitly sexual and eye-popping!

lina-romay Female Vampire

Lina Romay naked blood bath

Lina Romay banana

One of their most notorious is “The Hot Nights Of Linda”, with the censored “banana” scene….which you can now see on a newly released blu-ray edition of the film…read all about it here:

Linda’s Shocking “Hot” Nights! Lina Romay’s Classic Sexploitation!

Not all films of that era from Europe were this “shocking”…which leads to the next “s-ploitation” genre known as:

classic sexploitation movies

“ART-Sploitation”!

What exactly is this? “Sinner” is a perfect example – “artsploitation” films came from Europe, beginning with the shocking film that started it all:

I Am Curious Yellow

“I Am Curious (Yellow)” was brought up on obscenity charges, but when they won their case, the floodgates were open to a lot of wild films from Europe – these
movies were chock full of sexual situations and full nudity – but with social issues of the day thrown in as well…making it supposedly a more “artistic” endeavor….like this:

Christina Lindberg Maid

Meet Christina Lindberg, The “Queen Of Artsploitation!”

I have written about all of Lindberg’s films – this Swedish Star made some of the best “Artsploitation” films of the 70’s, like these:

Sex Kitten Christina Lindberg

Christina Lindberg exposed

WideO-dvd

Christina Lindberg was a huge star in the 70’s – Her most provocative movie, which Quentin Tarantino used as an inspiration for “Kill Bill”, was the classic “Thriller: A Cruel Picture” AKA “They Call Her One-Eye!”

Sex Kitten Christina Lindberg

They call her one-eye-poster

Read about all of her amazing films by clicking on my story here:

Christina Lindberg Speaks! The “Queen Of Artsploitation” Bares All!

While Christina was nude throughout all of her films, the movies themselves tried to tell compelling, intelligent stories…THIS “S-ploitation” genre, however, didn’t bother!

sinful dwarf nudity

Welcome To The Wacky World Of “Dwarf-Sploitation”!

Well, you knew it had to lead to this: one of the most exploitive movies ever released, thanks of course to the Europeans! Time to meet The Sinful Dwarf!

The Sinful Dwarf

This movie has NO redeeming social values, and isn’t that why we are watching?

And now, the terrific home video company Severin Films is bringing this “Dwarf” back on blu-ray!

The Sinful Dwarf blu-ray

Severin films The Sinful Dwarf

The new blu-ray includes a ton of special features, including a look at the cast and crew!

Of course, one of my favortie stories of all is the disappearing starlet of “Sinful Dwarf”, Anne Sparrow. It was her only film, and then she disappeared from movie screens forever!

The Sinful Dwarf (1973)

This beautiful Actress bares all in the film, but also gives a brave, professional performance – and then she disappeared forever!

Read all about the mystery of Anne Sparrow by clicking here:

https://johnrieber.com/2015/09/16/sinful-sex-kitten-anne-sparrow-the-mystery-of-a-disappearing-starlet/

These films in the 70’s made it to the US and helped open the door to a more explicit era in film…some wacky 70’s exploitation films, however, never left their country of origin – like these!

Sex and fury nude poster

Time For Some “J-Sploitation!”

Welcome to wild and wacky Japan! The genre known as “J-Sploitation” dealt with Japanese sexploitation films – also called:

“Pink Films”!

These movies were about girls who got into trouble and had to fight their way out!

pinky violence

These films evoke a style like “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” and are definitely worth checking out!

Read all about them here:

https://johnrieber.com/2014/08/18/wild-japan-cinema-pinky-violence-amazing-cult-exploitation-madness/

If you think only countries like Japan can release disturbing films that call their own culture into question, you are wrong!

country_cuzzins hicksploitation

Hick-sploitation!

Yes, right here in the heartland of the US of A, your “Country Cuzzins” are ready to party!

These movies are called “hick-Sploitation”, and they usually deal with country girls down on the farm who are ready to “get down”!

Sassy Sue

It’s a genre full of haystacks, “aw shucks” dialogue, and lots and lots of nudity! See what these “Country Cuzzins” are up to by clicking on my story here:

https://johnrieber.com/2015/12/12/gator-bait-country-lovin-hillbilly-brides-sex-action-missing-teeth-hicksploitation-lives/

These films evolved into more mainstream fare like “Gator Bait” and “White Lightning” with Burt Reynolds…just good old boys having some fun…back in Europe however, things just got darker and darker…

hannad-cover

Shoot Up Some “Drug-Sploitation!”

This genre of “S-ploitation” had a short run in the US, with serious films like “The Panic In Needle Park” with Al Pacino:

Al Pacino The Panic In Needle Park

Junkies on the streets of New York have movie stars attached, while in Europe, heroin addiction was just another plot point in films full of sex and violence like this:

Hanna_D

See more about these rough and tumble descents into heroin madness by clicking on my story here:

https://johnrieber.com/2012/07/11/virgins-from-hell-plus-dead-virgins-too-oh-and-hannas-hooked-on-smack-exploitation-lives-on/

As you can see, Europeans dealt with social issues in one way, in the US it was a bit more humorous…like this genre:

Haji motorcycle movie naked chicks

Rev Up Some Classic “Hog-Sploitation”!

Yes, biker chicks was the rage in the 70’s – tough girls who could kick ass and take names!

Angels_die_hard_naked chopper chicks

Here is a list of some of the best:

https://johnrieber.com/2016/01/04/sexy-chopper-chicks-naked-cycle-sluts-sex-violence-hog-sploitation/

And there is one genre I could never support:

Raquel Welch as sexy nun

“Nun-Sploitation!”

This genre was touched upon a bit when Raquel Welch played the sexiest “cleave-flaunting” nun of all time:

Raquel Welch the Nun

Yes, Raquel dipped her breasts into the “euro-sleaze” genre in a big way!

“Euro-sleaze” is a type of movie made in Europe that didn’t even pretend to have any socially redeeming qualities – but big stars would make them because there was money to be made!

bluebeard poster

Raquel Welch was a sexy nun in the “euro-sleaze” classic “Bluebeard”.

Sasha Grey Greyscale

Sasha Grey Presents “GREYSCALE”!

Hey everyone, I want to share a great new artistic effort by Sasha Grey – here is the official announcement:

“GREYSCALE” is a new short format series that approaches art as poetic commentary along with visually stunning photography, hosted and created by Sasha Grey and directed by Mattia Venni Uberti. A far turn from traditional review and television documentaries, the episodes themselves becomes cinematic art. Our first pilot episode is a sample of what I hope the future can hold. Shot at MOCA’s permanent collection in Los Angeles, I take the viewer on a photographic and poetic journey. MOCA’s collection offers a wide range of artists, where as in the future we may chose to focus on a particular artist’s solo exhibition at a particular gallery in future episodes, or conversely, classic pieces at a variety of museums. This will provide for a different dialogue and reflection, creating an individual tone for each episode.

Sasha-Grey

This beautifully filmed new series explores art in a unique way – please check out this terrific video:
